How to Get Rid of Rabbits

!±8± How to Get Rid of Rabbits

Making a Rabbit-Proof Fence

Keeping rabbits away from your outdoor vegetation (including trees - they also eat bark) requires a multi-channel approach for maximum effectiveness: fencing, repellents, live traps, guards, and distractions. If it's legal in your area and you enjoy the flavor of rabbit stew, you can adopt the "pioneer approach:" sit by your window with a rifle or shotgun and pick them off one-by-one. We'll start with the fence.

To fence your garden, you will need 36-inch chicken wire of sufficient length to encircle the area. Plan on placing wooden or metal stakes about every four feet and rig up some kind of gate that the long-eared interlopers cannot get through or under. Your local building supply person can give you tips on that. If you have another notorious garden pest in your area, deer, you will need a taller fence made out of something sturdier than inch-mesh chicken wire.

Dig a trench 6-12-inches wide and about four inches deep before placing the stakes. Bend the bottom three or four inches of the chicken wire into an L-shape, with the bottom of the 'L' on the ground, stretching away from the fenced area and bury it. This will keep burrowing bunnies from getting through.

To protect trees, wrap quarter-inch hardware cloth around the base of young trees. You can tell when rabbits are attacking your trees, typically in winter when there's little else to forage, by the marks left by their two large incisors (picture Bugs Bunny biting on a tree trunk).
Rabbit Repellents

If you want to get really medieval on Thumper and his buddies, consider installing an electrified fence, which does not have to be buried. The mild electric jolt will send the pests scurrying to your neighbor's garden.

Even with a fence, it's a good idea to surround your garden with thing that emit odors that the rabbits hate. The most widely used items are garlic and lavender. They don't like the odor of catnip, either, so plant a border of the stuff around your garden. Foxglove and monkshood also work because rabbits know they're poisonous (maybe not a good idea if you have kids, though). These plants also tend to repel deer. Another alternative is to spread a concentrated garlic powder called Pro-Tecs. Camphor is also widely used, but not recommended. Though these animals hate camphor, spreading moth balls or anything similar around your property effectively coats your entire property in poison which can cause problems for you, your pets, your garden, and ground water.

One or two rabbit-hating (or rabbit-loving) dogs on the family estate will also discourage rabbits and deer, but only while the dogs are outside running about. Once the dogs go inside the house, the varmints will be back. Forget about cats. Australia once attempted to get a handle on its out-of-control feral rabbit population by releasing hundreds of cats into the wild. Mice may not have fared well, but the rabbits continued damaging native plants, and thumbing their paws at the cats, until a virus deadly only to rabbits was introduced. It worked, but that is not a control method available to you.

Feral Cats In North America

!±8± Feral Cats In North America

Cats are not native to North America. From their humble beginnings into domestication in Egypt around or about 5000BC, cats have slowly moved from continent to continent. In Europe, they were not very well accepted and often caught a killed until the plagues in the Dark Ages. With their superb hunting skills, they were very helpful lowering the rodent population and therefore gained acceptance.

From Europe, the cats came with the new settlers. Often, cats were carried on the ships to combat the rodent problem and they would often escape when the ship was docked. In North America, it is estimated that the cat population is over 65 million.

Cats tend to have a free ranging spirit often traveling a few square miles as their home territory from their home. These domestic cats that are free roaming are not native to the North American ecosystem. On quite the occasion, some of these cats will not return home or would be abandoned and become feral cats.

Between the feral cats and the free roaming cats, they have an impact on the ecosystem where they live. Often, this becomes a problem for the wildlife that live in the region. The cats' prey may already be under stress or their numbers may be low. If there is an overabundance of feral cats in the region, there can be devastating effects.

In some areas, the Galapagos Islands for example, wildlife managers have had to utilize an extermination program to return certain islands to the natural ecosystem. This is an area that not only were the cats not native to the area but there was no significant human population for the cats to have just wandered away from. The occurrence of these cats becoming feral cats came about from cats that were traveling on merchant ships escaping while the ship was at the island resupplying food or water resources.

In North America, the situation is often not that severe. If you talk to people that live in rural areas that have a lot of cats, they would fill you with stories of how this cat or that cat showed up at their door as a newly born kitten in the middle of the night. Often, the comment goes back to city-folk dropping off their kittens that momma cat had and they didn't want. They just think that the cat belongs in the country and if they drop it off near the farmhouse, the farmer will take it in and it can hunt mice and rats thereby earning its keep.

This adds an additional expense to the farmer and more often than not, these cats will not receive medical care and worse, they will mate and reproduce until there are too many to care for. Let me paint a vivid picture from a farmer I knew. He commented: "when the number of cats and kittens gets to be too many, I would just gather up some of the extra kittens, put them in a burlap sack, tie it shut and throw it in the lake. After they are dead, I would pull the bag out of the water and bury it in the ground".

There are alternatives. If you took the cats to the veterinarian, you could have them spayed or neutered. There is an expense involved with this and unfortunately has been a problem with the rural landowner in this forced adoption situation. As we are becoming more aware, there are more spay and neuter clinics coming to assistance and some of these programs are conducting catch and release programs.

Although cats are not native to North America, they are natural in our homes and they are here to stay. The problem is when the cats leave our homes and become feral cats. We don't fully understand the impact that they have on the ecosystem and there are advocacy groups to protect them from "Wildlife Management operations". There are obvious answers and not so obvious answers. The solution will never be cut and dry here in North America.

Lumpy a beastly cat with cerebellar hypoplasia plays a game

This is a game Lumpy plays about 30 times a day. He scratches at the litter box to get my attention, then he runs under the bed, peeling out as he makes the bend. Lumpy was a feral kitten that I adopted from the street when he was about 3 months old. He has Cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurologic disorder which affects motor skills. He is an amazing animal, very intelligent and extremely affectionate. I hope you enjoy these videos.

Show You Care -- Neuter Your Cat

!±8± Show You Care -- Neuter Your Cat

The hordes of homeless and feral cats everywhere are growing by leaps and bounds, and finally people are beginning to wake up to the necessity of neutering their cats.

Population Explosion

Because cats can reproduce several times a year, and kittens mature quickly, just 2 feral cats (the wild offspring of domestic cats) can quickly become 2,000. In fact, the feline reproduction statistics are staggering. 2 uncontrolled breeding cats produce: 2 litters a year, at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter. Continued breeding will produce 12 cats the first year, 66 cats the second year, 2,201 cats in the third year, 3,822 cats in the fourth year, 12,680 cats in the fifth year, and on and on . . .

Unaltered Cats Spread Disease

Many of these feral cats are actually unaltered pet cats (or their offspring) that were released by owners who could no longer care for them. A colony of feral cats can spread diseases among pet cats and dogs in the area.

Even when these cats are fairly healthy, they are usually infested with fleas. Hungry cats will raid trash cans, and playful kittens will destroy shrubbery and soil lawn furniture.

Noise Pollution From Cats In Heat

When female cats are in heat, the colony can keep neighbors awake all night with their fighting and howling

Spaying and neutering cats provides several important benefits in addition to reducing the number of unwanted cats. If you have an un-neutered female cat at home, the sound of her mewling pitifully at the door will soon be joined by the yowling and shrieking of every tomcat in the neighborhood. Both indoor and outdoor tomcats will try to mark everything in sight with their odorous spray.

Reproductive Cancers In Unaltered Cats

Certain types of cancer are much more common in unaltered cats. These cancers of the reproductive organs are very rare in cats that are altered prior to 1 year of age. Unaltered cats can also develop a number of reproductive diseases that are contagious.

Help Make Every Cat A Wanted Cat

Kittens can be altered at quite a young age. Some humane societies routinely alter kittens at 8 weeks. While some veterinarians feel that it is better to wait until kittens are 5 or 6 months, that is often simply not a option. Certainly for feral kittens who are trapped for altering, then released back into their colonies, or for those who share a home with other unaltered cats, neutering at the earliest opportunity is critical.

Most cats heal well and without incident after being neutered. However, a cat can contract an infection in the incision. Check your cat daily to be sure the incision area has not turned red and puffy. If you notice your cat licking or chewing at the stitches, your vet may suggest a surgery collar to keep the stitches out of reach until the incision is healed. While male cats can be active and bouncy without injuring themselves after neutering, female cats should be confined indoors for a few days after the surgery.

Feline "Zero Population Growth"

Unless you're a cat breeder, your cat almost certainly would be better off neutered. The typical cost of neutering a cat is about 5 for a female and for a male. If the cost is too much for you to afford, many communities have special funds available for neutering cats. Your humane society or veterinarian can give you more information.

Advantages of Spaying Or Neutering Your Cat

!±8± Advantages of Spaying Or Neutering Your Cat

Expecting a litter of kittens is fun, but there comes a problem after they are born. Now, they need homes. If you're lucky, you can keep them, but one litter of kittens can become dozens in quite a hurry.

I can give you examples from personal experience why most cats should have "what wasn't broken fixed." The results can be tragic for the animals.

I grew up on a farm, and every year there would be kittens abandoned along our property line. Most of them we didn't find, or if we found them, they were already dead. I guess the idiot that did the dropping figured we could use another cat.

Most of these kittens were not old enough for solid food. Without a nursing cat around, mom had to try to keep them alive with an eye dropper. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. It was always upsetting.

I live in a suburb of Los Angeles now, and on a very busy road. More than one feral cat has been killed on that road, because someone brought a cat home, turned it loose (un-fixed) on the neighborhood and let it "be free." One of these cats produced five generations of offspring before we managed to capture the females and have them spayed.

No one wants to see or think about a cute little kitten dying, whether it's in an animal shelter, on the road or by sheer negligence, but that is the result of not having your animals fixed.

There are times when you may want to have a litter of kittens. You may be a breeder, and since you presumably follow the rules set out by your cat's breed, that's fine. Or, perhaps you have a female cat and you want to let her have one litter. If you know you can place all the kittens...and that both mama and babies will be fixed, that's fine.

For the rest of us, spaying and neutering is necessary to protect the next generation of pets from pain, suffering and death.

Proper Cat bite treatment

!±8± Proper Cat bite treatment

Our cats can bite you at times. This can not mean that they are rebellious enough cats, but if they inspire, tend to react suddenly and bite us. So play around with our cats can be very dangerous. Although they are all quiet and subdued when they feel danger to defend themselves with canine teeth as a weapon. And 'quite common for farmers to be bitten by her cat. To ensure that all procedures, know how to heal.

Thefirst minute we got bitten, must be washed immediately. It 'going to get rid of any particles of dirt in our skin. We need a thorough cleaning of the wound as possible. With sufficient water and soap. Then, if you have a bleeding wound and keep moving in, in order to stop the bleeding. Place the injured hand above the heart area. This is the blood flow slows down a bit 'and stop the bleeding.

Unless we give our cats vaccinated against rabies beforemust be taken to hospital. Animals that are not vaccinated against rabies may be dangerous, after all the saliva and if we bite, we would be in danger. The doctor will then give us the first vaccination against tetanus. This will help our immune system contribute to infection that can occur due to the bite of a cat fight.

We need to recognize that signs of severe infection. If the wound has not stopped, have swelling, then spread the infection or anger must be in our bodies. This step must be taken toHospital. We need to do before you get a fever. This is a sign of a lethal infection anger.

We can not prevent this from happening, we decided if our cats vaccinated against rabies for the first time to write. When we shot, then, even if we bite, there would be no risk of rabies infection. We should be aware of the dangers that we get when we have pets.

Now, if we try to scare and jokes with our cats, we need to make sure that p must not be bitten. In fact, catscan behave very well and good provided that we do not play too hard on them, which may react wildly. We also need to give them what they need. Probably some 'of us, why not give them food and hunger.

Can these are the ways we do to prevent bites and cats always the remedy for them, if at all, it happens.

Costa Rica Sea Turtle Conservation Project

!±8± Costa Rica Sea Turtle Conservation Project

A program to support local environmental projects is a big step forward with the decision to Matapalo Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Project of funds has made the work of the Association of Volunteers for service in the protected areas to help Costa Rica.

The ASVO is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that promotes environmental protection and education through the participation of volunteers and has been recognized by the government of Costa Rica for his work with young peopleCosta Rica and the visit of foreign students through "hands-on" education, saving on ecologically sensitive areas of work.

For over 16 years working in Costa Rica ASVO and volunteers have an active role in working in almost 25% of the land that was reserved for the conservation of nature played together. ASVO finding volunteers donate their time in many national parks of Costa Rica and nature reserves, a number of other projects, every yearThere are about 1,500 volunteers who work to make a difference here.

The Sea Turtle Conservation Project in Matapalo began in 1990 when a group of students from the School of Professional Technical Matapalo along with other community members to develop an initiative to protect sea turtle nests from poachers and some natural enemies.

In 2005 the local organization has begun in coordination with the ASVO, and the developers of Hacienda Matapalo, who were able to provideVolunteers in the form of two university students from Costa Rica and abroad. Most of the students worked on the project for 15 days under the supervision of biologists, support for the creation of areas of fencing nests and collect eggs from nests, isolated, then transfer to protected areas (eggs, which could otherwise be deprived of "hueveros" that would sell turtle eggs practice is prohibited by law).

On nights where sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, the volunteerswait patiently, like turtles dig their nests, while the eggs are laid, the turtle will be measured and numbered with ID bracelets, so they can be prosecuted for traveling purposes. If the eggs are transferred to the new nest protected, can be identified by species, the number of eggs, and the date of spawning. Since then, new nests guarded day and night. The work of monitoring of nests Matapalo beach falls under the jurisdiction of the National System of the areaConservation, which is part of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

The Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricatta) and the black turtle (Chelonia mydas agassizii) Pacific Playa Matapalo every visit, and all are endangered.

The Olive Ridley turtle smallest of sea turtles. The adults measure 55-70 inches in length kg in their shells, with a total weight of 35-45They reach sexual maturity between 10 and 15 years and probably live about 50 or 60 years, yet they are sexually active is only slightly more than 21 years. The spawning season, especially for dark brown turtle began June 1 and extends until November 30 of each year.

Keep an average of 110 eggs from the nest and the incubation period is 46-65 days, depending on the temperature. Olive Ridley are known for their famous massSubstandard coming literally dozens and dozens of women on the ground to move. The females return every 1-2 years. A turtle eggs of up to two times per season to put in an interval of 17-28 days.

The hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate) are more common in the bottom and reef habitats are difficult to find with a sponge .. They are also in the shallows, lagoons of oceanic islands and continental shelf. In general, they are found in waters deeper than sixty feet (18.3 m). WhenHawksbill turtles are young, are not to jump into deep water and are therefore forced to masses of floating aquatic plants, such as Sargassum live. The coupling is ripe for hawksbill about every two years and the women always occurs on the beach, originally born out.

The Black Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas agassizii) is closely related to the common green sea turtle in the context, but is slightly smaller weighing from 150 to 280 pounds. Their range is the tropicalEastern Pacific Ocean and spawning grounds along the coast of Central America are, and are the only species of nesting turtles in the Galapagos Islands.

Sea turtles return to lay their eggs on the same beach where they were born, once they reach sexual maturity. Like the turtle, which is the right beach is probably a combination of smell and a sort of internal monitoring (and we are not asked to speak). Once the eggs hatch the baby turtles dig their way outsurface nests and head into the sea.

Hacienda Matapalo data collected after the 2005-2008 Matapalo beach 900 turtles were recorded, for a total of 42 743 eggs were protected and were released 35 794 hatchlings (Tortuguitas). Threats to humans

Populations ofThe turtles can survive natural threats, but human intervention has led to a strong acceleration of the loss of population. The main threats to humans are changing the habitat of turtles: the extraction of eggs for consumption or trade, pollution, urban development in coastal areas, an increase of artificial light in the nesting areas, as well bycatch in commercial fishing and destruction at the end of the egg and wild dogs as petsCats.

Through the sponsorship of Hacienda Matapalo, the sea turtle project has been provided with all the materials and equipment for building safe nesting sites. In addition to the cost of maintaining the workforce for the construction was covered as well. The land has an area of 200 square meters (over 2,100 square meters), which is about 200 nests of this home season.

In addition, Hacienda Matapalo funds for the purchase of equipment and software donated to theRecording of data for soil and water temperatures and relative humidity of the nest in order to determine how these factors influence the sex of unborn turtle. These tools will allow us to monitor, from about 30 nests for a period of about two months, covering the time line of the deposition of eggs for hatching. Be monitored throughout the season of about 60 nests.
